Son of Yael and Dov. Born on the 14th day of Tevet 5,762 (29.12.2001) in Reut. Brother of Elyakim (Eliq), Merav, Ehud, Elad, Evyatar, Meitar and Tamar. On November 2020, he enlisted in the IDF and served in the Commando Brigade. Captain Eitan Oster fell in battle on the 29th day of Elul 5,784 (2.10.2024). He was twenty-two years old. He was laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery on Mount Herzl. He is survived by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

G. K. Chesterton wrote that “A true warrior fights not because of his hatred for what is in front of him, but because of his love for what is behind him.”

This is how Eitan opened the video he sent his family on Rosh Hashanah, just as he and his team in Egoz prepared to be among the first to enter Lebanon, remove the threat of Hezbollah, and allow the residents of the north to return home.

That was the last video they received from him. Eitan fell the next night in battle, and the sentence he quoted was soon echoed across news sites and social media. Through it, Eitan left his mark not only on his family but on the hearts of everyone who saw him. He showed the world that he truly was a “true warrior”- one who loved deeply.

He loved his family. He loved his nephews. He loved his soldiers, the residents of the north, the people of the Gaza Envelope, and the hostages whose names he carried in the pocket of his uniform, reminding himself and his team who they were fighting for.

During the Shiva, as his family gathered stories about Eitan, it became clear how perfectly that sentence captured who he was and how much it should guide all of us in the State of Israel.
